gander
A traditional house in a secluded pocket, with views out into the treetops meets an art collection (mostly contemporary) and a mix of furniture and decorative pieces—some inherited, some collected, all with attachments. A soft, creamy off-white bathes the main level from floor to ceiling, unifying previous interventions, and creating an airy gallery-like setting for the aforementioned collections without feeling stark. Limestone counters and backsplash extend the soft, light coloration and lend depth and texture to the kitchen while echoing the patination of the mixed nickels, brasses, and bronzes introduced throughout the house. With a curatorial eye, plumbing fixtures, lighting, hardware, millwork and furnishings reinterpret and emphasize both the traditional and the more sculptural, contemporary aspects of the art collection. Contrast, sparing use of color for emphasis, and texture characterize most of the family-friendly spaces while a daughter’s bedroom becomes a whimsical jewel where color, pattern, and playful shapes abound.
